Thanks for your prayers for the Impact Summit in NY on Wednesday. I feel like I've been to a mountain top.
At the meeting, I recalled an experience in the laundry room in Nairobi in 2007. I was ironing my clothes along with Godfrey, an Anglican priest from Gulu, Uganda, at town that has seen untold horrors at the hands of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). (If you're not aware of the situation there, go to www.invisiblechildren.com.) Godfrey said, "I don't understand why the church around the world doesn't respond. Don't they know what's happening? Don't they care?" I couldn't answer.
In New York on Wednesday, I sat around a table with 25 leaders of major Christian organizations, business entrepreneurs, and funders who gathered because their hearts are broken for the incredible suffering of the people in the Great Lakes region of Africa, and who want to unite to respond holistically--with Scripture, with trauma healing, with education, clean water, jobs, hospitals, whatever is needed. Godfrey's prayer-question is getting an answer.
The American Bible Society will take the next steps to create a clearing house for connections between organizations working in the area, as well as with the local church leaders. Stay tuned.
My presentation on Trauma Healing was extremely well-received. The materials fill a much-needed niche in the whole picture. Thanks so much for your prayers.
Harriet, I was moved by your conversation with Godfrey, and by so many things I read at Invisible Children. Thank you for what YOU are doing to help make a difference. I look forward to hearing more in the future.
